FORT MYLAN, Nigeria (AP) — The drug maker's anti-impotence drug Viagra has been prescribed by doctors as an effective treatment for impotence in men, researchers say.
A study by researchers at the University of Lagos and at Eli Lilly University in Abuja found that the drug helped men with erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penile area.
Viagra, sold by Pfizer, was developed to treat erectile dysfunction in men by improving the body's response to sexual arousal.
Dr John Fung, lead investigator for the study, told the BBC that the results were promising because it allowed men to gain more confidence in their sexual performance and was a potential treatment for impotence.
"This is not a new development in the treatment of erectile dysfunction," Dr Fung said.
Viagra was originally developed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction by a British pharmaceutical company called Levitra. However, after researchers identified the drug as a potential drug for erectile dysfunction, the British drugmaker launched its drug in 2007.
According to the study, men who took the drug saw an improvement in their ability to get and keep an erection, as well as an increase in their ability to get and keep an erection.
Researchers also discovered that men who took the drug were also able to achieve an erection, with the effect lasting for a longer time. The study's authors said the findings had implications for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

According to Lilly, the generic version of the drug, called Sildenafil Citrate, is available by prescription only.
The company is also developing the Sildenafil Citrate version for patients who have not yet reached the recommended dose of 100mg, according to Lilly.
Lilly is the second company to launch a generic drug for erectile dysfunction. Pfizer launched the first drug, Viagra in 2002.
