The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra and Levitra in the US, but the company is now facing legal troubles due to the drug's use in treating erectile dysfunction.

The FDA's approval of Pfizer's impotence drug, Viagra, came after the company was sued over claims that the drug caused birth defects. The suit was filed in a U. S. court in Brooklyn on Wednesday, in the state of California.

In a ruling, the court found that the drug did not cause a birth defect. The company had not disclosed the facts of the lawsuit, which is not yet in force.

"Pfizer has not provided adequate information on the safety or efficacy of Viagra, and it was not disclosed at the time of the approval of Viagra," a Pfizer spokesman said in a statement. "Pfizer has not given any reasons for the decision to approve Viagra or Levitra. The company has been cooperating with the FDA's investigation. It will have no role in the decision and no liability."

Viagra has not been linked to birth defects, according to a Pfizer spokesman.

The lawsuit also claimed that the drug caused men to get male breast cancer and other cancers.

"Pfizer is aware of reports that it is associated with breast cancer," said Eli Lilly & Company spokeswoman Cindy Whitehead. "We are aware of reports of some of these cases but are not aware of the full extent of the risk."

In the suit, Pfizer alleged that the drug caused men to get an erection in the first place and a "wonderful" side effect of its erectile dysfunction.

The lawsuit was filed in Brooklyn federal court in Manhattan on March 13.

Pfizer on Tuesday said it had won over $1 billion in settlements with the plaintiff for about $6 billion. The company's lawsuit is pending in federal court in California.

Pfizer spokeswoman Cindy Whitehead said, "The company is aware of these settlements. We intend to settle in the United States."

In the suit, the company alleged that Viagra caused men to get male breast cancer and other cancers. The suit also alleged that Pfizer's Viagra increased the risk of breast cancer by 20 per cent.

Viagra and Levitra are both brand-name drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction.

In a statement to The New York Times, Pfizer said in an email that its "research products, including Viagra, and its products are intended to treat erectile dysfunction by improving blood flow to the penis, and the ability to achieve and maintain a penile erection."

The lawsuit also alleged that Pfizer and the companies' marketing partners, such as Cialis, have engaged in a "coordination and direct marketing of their own products through Pfizer and other drug companies," according to the suit.

The suit also claimed that Pfizer's Viagra was approved for use only in adult men.

According to the lawsuit, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Viagra in March 2012 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
